Why Pasture Raised?

Pasture Pork Rasied Red Wattle Mills River WNC Western North Carolina Forge Mountain Fullam Farm

Heritage Breed

Our heritage breed pigs are a mix of Red Wattle, Berkshire, and IPP (Idaho Pasture Pig: Duroc, Kune Kune, and Berkshire). We have selected these breed combinations due to their mothering skills, growth rate, and meat composition.

Heritage breed pigs are well suited for life on pasture and can remain outdoors all year round.

Meat experts and chefs alike, have been known to rave about  cooking with heritage breed animals due to their meat composition. It is said to be more well marbled, juicy, comparable to beef, and sweet with a depth of flavor.

Pasture Raised

We utilize a rotational grazing system, inspired by Joel Salatin. This means we move the pigs to fresh pasture grass quite often, depending on the weather, paddock size, and group size.

The pigs love to run around, root for nutrients such as iron from the ground, cool off in the mud, and of course they enjoy those belly rubs! With the combination of breed selection and being raised on pasture, the meat is well marbled and much more rich in flavor!
